Open letter to East Lincoln Optimist Club:

On Sunday, June 3, 2018, the East Lincoln Optimist Club held a charity event on behalf of our 11-year old son, Elliott.  Elliott was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the beginning of the spring baseball season.  The good people at ELO recognized, although the prognosis is good for this type of cancer, the journey is hard.  Born from a desire to ease the burden of this journey, the idea of an adult baseball game in Elliott’s honor came to fruition.

And what a day it was!  The weather was just as you can picture from your youthful days; sunshine, blue skies, a perfect day for a summer pick-up game of baseball.  But most amazing was the turnout.  To see so many come to support our son was absolutely overwhelming.  To see Elliott brighten, have fun, and be a part of such a demonstration of compassion was incredible.  To anyone who saw Elliott’s smile that day, you saw only a glimmer of the light which was lit that day.  You see, Elliott has a few basic loves in his life; God, family, country, and baseball.

Elliott started playing baseball in the T-ball league at ELO.  ELO is where he fell in love with the game and ELO is where he will play again as soon as he is able.  For Elliott to be with others and see adults share the love of baseball is pure happiness.

There is no way to express the joy and encouragement that day brought to Elliott.  But as we thought about all the participation, including fielding three teams, local businesses showing their support, and East Lincoln Fire Department stopping by, we realized that day was bigger than about Elliott.  It was about community.  It was about the community of East Lincoln coming together and demonstrating whey we call East Lincoln our home.  It was about the kind of compassion, generosity, and teamwork that makes this a great community and America a great country.

You should be proud of yourselves as we are proud to be a part of the East Lincoln family.  We encourage you in further charitable endeavors and speak first hand to the huge impact it makes.  You’ve made a boy and his family happy and a community proud.

To coaches Neal and Matt, the ELOC administration, the parents & players, and the entire East Lincoln community, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

May God bless you, the community of East Lincoln, and America.

The Kappers family
